The Apocalypse of Abraham is a pseudepigraphal work that narrates Abraham’s rejection
of idol worship and his subsequent ascent to heaven, where he is shown eschatological secrets through angelic mediation.
This fascinating text was only preserved in Old Church Slavonic and must be studied as both a medieval Christian and an ancient Jewish text.
This monograph addresses the following questions:
— Why were medieval Slavs translating and reading Jewish pseudepigrapha?
— How much, if at all, did they emend or edit the Apocalypse of Abraham?
— When in antiquity was it most likely written?
— What were its ancient Jewish social and theological contexts?

Die Apokalypse des Abraham ist ein pseudepigraphisches Werk, das Abrahams Ablehnung des Götzendienstes und seinen anschließenden Aufstieg in den Himmel beschreibt. Dort wird er durch die Vermittlung von Engeln in die eschatologischen Weltgeheimnisse eingeweiht.
Dieser faszinierende Text ist nur in Alt-Kirchen-Slawisch erhalten.
Er muss allerdings sowohl als mittelalterlicher christlicher als auch als antik-jüdischer Text verstanden werden. Diese Monographie befasst sich nun mit den folgenden Fragen:
— Warum übersetzten und lasen die mittelalterlichen Slawen jüdische Pseudepigraphen?
— Inwieweit, wenn überhaupt, haben sie die Apokalypse Abrahams verändert oder bearbeitet?
— Wann im Altertum wurde sie wahrscheinlich geschrieben?
— In welchem sozialen und theologischen Kontext stand sie im antiken Judentum?

Die Autorin Amy E. Paulsen-Reed ist Linguistin und Religionswissenschaftlerin mit dem Forschungsschwerpunkt Kulturen des Nahen Ostens. Sie promovierte 2016 mit „The Origins of the Apocalypse of Abraham“ an der Harvard Divinity School der Harvard-Universität.
